The Greenwich Democratic Party’s nominating committee has unveiled its slate of candidates for the upcoming 2023 municipal elections.
According to the committee, the recommended candidates were chosen for their qualifications and dedication, emphasizing protecting property values, investing in Greenwich schools, and fostering competent and compassionate governance for all residents.
Laura Erickson, a former banker and current Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) officeholder, leads the slate as the candidate for First Selectperson. Alongside incumbent Selectperson Janet Stone-McGuigan,theyarejoined by six other recommended candidates for the BET. Erickson aims to enhance the quality of life and economic vitality of Greenwich while ensuring the preservation of property values.
Erickson says she has prioritized addressing long-standing issues such as traffic, infrastructure stewardship, and public safety. She advocates for thoughtful planning and proactive problem-solving based on her experience on the BET Budget Committee and as the former chair of the Board of Education. Additionally, Erickson is a respected long-term resident of Greenwich and has been involved in various community roles, including serving as co-president of the Parent-Teacher Association at Greenwich High and Riverside School.
The six recommended BET candidates, including three incumbents, bring diverse backgrounds in banking, finance, town government, and volunteerism. They offer expertise in municipal finance, which the committee believes can bene t Greenwich taxpayers.
Joe Angland, Chair of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee, expressed confidence in the recommended candidates, emphasizing their ability to bridge divides and address the growing influence of extreme politics. Angland stated, “This slate is a promise to town residents that they have a chance to move away from aimless agendas and embrace candidates who bring competence, vision, and factual understanding.”
In a display of party unity, Jim Finn, a Cos Cob Democrat who had previously announced his candidacy for First Selectperson, has withdrawn from the nomination process. Finn’s decision allows the Democratic slate to begin campaigning promptly.
The complete list of recommended candidates includes positions such as Selectperson, Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Board of Estimation and Taxation, Board of Education, Board of Assessment Appeals, and Constable. The Greenwich Democratic Town Committee will hold its nominating convention on July 20th to officially endorse the candidates, as required by state law.
