
Mary Theresa Stelben passed away on January 20 leaving behind her loving husband John Joseph Stelben.
Mary was born in New York City on July 10, 1936 to Ellen and Edward Byrne, and was raised in the Inwood section of Manhattan. Mary had four siblings. She is survived by her brother Edward Byrne and his spouse Marilyn and her sister Sheila (Byrne) Giancaspro. Two sisters, Susan (Byrne) Heinz and Elizabeth Byrne, have predeceased her.
Mary graduated with honors from The Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Manhattan in 1953 and attended Wood Business School. She then worked as an executive secretary at Texaco. Mary and John married in 1957 and Mary became a homemaker raising three children in their lifelong home in Greenwich, CT. Mary and John were married for 65 years prior to her passing.
She is survived by her daughter Teri (Stelben) DeBona and spouse Gary DeBona, along with her two sons John Stelben Jr. and spouse Rita (Krievins) Stelben, and Brian Stelben and spouse Tracey (Kammerer) Stelben. Mary has 6 grandchildren whom she adored, Kristen (DeBona) Bentley, Meagan DeBona, Caitlin (Stelben) Vanderburg, John Stelben III, Paul Stelben and Hannah Stelben. Mary was graced with 3 great grandchildren, George Bentley, Rose Bentley, and Arthur Vanderburg.
Mary was an artist who excelled in oil paintings and pastels. She was an avid reader, a fabulous cook, and enjoyed needlework, puzzles, game shows and historic trivia. Traveling was a passion for Mary, especially cruising with friends, or vacationing with her family on Cape Cod, MA and Palm Coast, FL. Mary’s greatest joys were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with whom she loved spending time.
Visitation for Mary will be held on Thursday, January 26 from 8:30- 9:30 am at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch Street, Greenwich CT 06830
A Catholic Mass will be held at 10 am, Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church, 84 Sherwood Ave, Greenwich, CT 06831.
Interment will follow Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Ave, Hawthorne, NY 10532
