POLICE & FIRE
Fire on Club Road
Late last week Greenwich Fire Department responded to a structure fire on club road. Originally dispatched as a fire alarm, upon arrival engine five found fire from the roof area. No one was injured. The fire marshal’s office is currently investigating.

Fire Christmas Day
On Christmas Day Greenwich Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on North Water Street in Byram. A fire was located on the first floor and was quickly extinguished. No residents were injured, but four families were displaced. The fire is under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.

Tod’s Point Causeway Closed during Construction
Last Friday the Parks & Recreation Department announced the next phase of construction on the Tod’s Point Causeway will begin this coming Monday, January 9th. The causeway will now be closed Monday-Fridays.

Town Hall Elevators
The Town Hall elevators have been repaired and are now back in service.

Reminder of Dogs at Tod’s Point
Tod’s Point is open to dogs on leashes from December 1st until March 31st. It is the law to keep your dog leashed at Tod’s point.

U-Haul Ranks CT #28 Growth State of 2022
According to a recent release by U-Haul analyzing customer moves during 2022, Connecticut is the #28 growth state in America. Connecticut slipped 10 spots from #18 in 2021.

Greenwich Fire Department Exec. Assistant Retires
Greenwich Fire Department executive assistant Vicki Gabriele is retiring this year after 27 years of service to the Town of Greenwich. 12 of those 27 years were spent with the Greenwich Fire Department.

First Greenwich Baby of 2023
Lily Rae Morrissey graced the world at 12:25 am on Sunday, January 1st 2023, becoming the first baby to be born at Greenwich Hospital this year.

Award for Fleet Director, Jay Domeseck
Town of Greenwich Fleet Director Jay Domeseck received the Municipal Fleet Director of the Year Award for Outstanding Leadership in Alternative Fuels from Connecticut Southwestern Area Clean Cities Coalition. The award was presented by Live Green Connecticut in early December.

December Town Hall Employee of the Month
Facilities Foreman John Thompson was December’s Employee of the Month, he received his certificate from First Selectman Fred Camillo on December 13th.

SCHOOLS
Public Hearing For WMS Soil Remediation
Greenwich Public Schools has moved to the next step for the Western Middle School (WMS) soil remediation project. There will be a public hearing this coming Wednesday, January 11th at 6pm at WMS. The hearing will be available virtually or in person, including both the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT-DEEP) and the CT Environmental Protection Agency to share thoughts and ask questions about the project.

SPORTS
Greenwich High girls basketball team edged out by host New Canaan, 43-42
In a back-and-forth FCIAC matchup, the Greenwich High School girls basketball team dropped an ultra-tight decision against host New Canaan this past Tuesday night, 43-42. The Cardinals, whose early-season record is 1-3, held a 12-8 lead on the Rams after the first quarter, but were limited to four points in the second quarter. New Canaan entered halftime with a 19-16 advantage.

Big third period lifts New Canaan past Greenwich in FCIAC boys hockey action
Greenwich struck first in its game against FCIAC hockey rival New Canaan this week, scoring the matchup’s first goal, but the Rams certainly had an emphatic response. The Rams seized control of this conference game, scoring the next five goals on their way to another early-season win.

Darien defeats Greenwich boys hockey team in the Winter Classic at Greenwich Skating Club, behind first-period goal
Last Thursday’s game between rivals Greenwich and Darien marked the fifth time the FCIAC hockey foes faced each other in the Winter Classic and like previous meetings, this encounter was a physical game that hung in the balance right until the end.

Behind Sophie Roth’s hat trick, Greenwich High girls hockey team earns first win of the season by topping Ridgefield co-op in Winter Classic at Greenwich Skating Club
Hats off to Sophie Roth and the Greenwich High School girls ice hockey team. Roth recorded a hat trick for the Cardinals, who earned their first win of the season at an event they’ve experienced plenty of success at in the past – the Winter Classic at Greenwich Skating Club.

Greenwich boys basketball team drops season-opener to Bunnell in tournament
The 2022-2023 season began with a tight loss for the Greenwich High School boys basketball team at the Bunnell Holiday Tournament on last Tuesday night.

Greenwich High girls hockey team edged by Conard/Hall; Cardinals will play in Winter Classic at Greenwich Skating Club
Four games into its season, the Greenwich High School girls ice hockey team is seeking its first win, but it came close to recording a victory against Hall/Conard last Tuesday night in a game that saw it perform well on both ends of the ice.

Possessing strong perimeter shooting and size, Greenwich’s boys basketball team out to qualify for the FCIAC, CIAC Division II tournaments this winter
Tenacious defensive play, along with experience in both the frontcourt and backcourt, sparked the Greenwich High School basketball team’s success last season, which saw it advance to the Round of 16 of the CIAC Division II Tournament.

Greenwich boys hockey team topped by North Haven, Winter Classic up next
After a subpar first period, the Greenwich High School boys hockey team had a strong second period against North Haven on last Wednesday night, outshooting its non-conference foe by a significant margin. However, the Cardinals’ shots-on-goal advantage in the second period didn’t result in goals, which is what coach Jack Duffy’s team has been searching for the first three games of the season.

Gov. Lamont Declines Salary
Governor Ned Lamont has chosen to decline a salary from the state of Connecticut for his second term, as he did in his previous term. Gov. Lamont received the oath of office and began his second term this past Wednesday, January 4th.

State Rep. Rachel Khanna Sword In
Newly elected State Representative Rachel Khanna was sworn in this past Wednesday to represent the 149th District, covering parts of Greenwich and Stamford. Rep. Khanna will serve as a member of the Appropriations, Government Administration and Elections, and Transportation Committees for the 2023 Legislative Session.

Attorney General Appoints Deputy Attorney General
This past Wednesday, Attorney General William Tong announced that he has appointed Eileen Meskill as Deputy Attorney General. Meskill’s predecessor Margaret Chapple is retiring this month after just over 30 years of service in the Office of the Attorney General.
