"Where Have the Scallops Gone?" Lecture

Scallops once thrived in the waters off Connecticut and New York, but have been scarce for decades. The story of their decline and the efforts at restoration of this important shellfish is the subject of a talk on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Innis Arden Cottage/Seaside Center in Greenwich Point Park, Old Greenwich.

Dr. Stephen T. Tettelbach, Professor of Biology and Graduate Co-Advisor, LIU Post, will present an overview of bay scallop biology and ecology, including an historical overview of their population and fishery status in the Northeast US. His talk will cover efforts that have been taken to restore bay scallops in different areas, with a focus on his work in New York over the last 30 years.

The talk is part of the Fred Elser First Sunday Science at the Seaside Center series, sponsored by the Bruce Museum and Greenwich Shellfish Commission. The afternoon includes family activities with shells and the live marine tank from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Seaside Center.

The event is free, no registration is required, and is open to all ages.
