Obituary: Margaret Fiala

Margaret Fiala

Margaret Barrett Fiala of Greenwich, CT, lovingly known by friends and family as Peggy, Peg and Auntie Peg, passed on November 1, after a brief hospitalization. Several months prior, she fell and sustained several fractures.

She was predeceased by her son, Robert (March 11, 2019); her parents, Martin and Mary (Flaherty) Barrett; her brothers, Martin, Patrick, Michael, Joseph, and Sean; sisters, Mary Anne Riccio and Delia (Bea) Craig; and niece, Elizabeth Craig.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest (Ernie), of 67 years; daughter, Susan Freeland; daughter-in-law, Elaine Wolf, granddaughter through adoption, Olga (Ola) Murphy (George); nephew, Frank Riccio; nieces, Mary Boison, Anne Regnery and Mary Craig.

Peggy was born in Spiddal Ireland, educated in the Catholic School and came to the United States for the many opportunities that were here. She took a position as a live-in housekeeper in Greenwich and within three years, married and focused on her own home and the arrival of her children. She was a terrific cook, catered and loved growing Orchids and African Violets. Later in life, she became a Home Health Aide as she felt it was important to tend to and honor the elders. Her children were always amazed by her ability to do mind math faster than they could with a calculator. She was the creator and the life of the party and her presence will be missed.

There will be a celebration of her life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the local food pantry would be appreciated.
