Peter Pauley

Peter Sanford Pauley of Hobe Sound, FL, passed away peacefully on April 15. Peter was born in St. Louis on August 23, 1935, to Estelle Sanford Pauley of Baton Rouge and Walter Earnest Pauley of Perkin, IL. He attended The Hill School and Williams College, where he graduated in 1957. After a year with Alcoa, he served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps for two years. He married the love of his life, Caroline “Biddy” Baxter Pauley and moved to Greenwich, CT in 1962. In 1967, he started his own firm – Pitt and Pauley, an insurance and real estate brokerage firm. He went on to have a long and successful career in the insurance industry with firms including A&A and AON, where he was Chairman of AON Corporation of Connecticut. He was also an underwriting member of Lloyd’s of London and Chairman of the Young Presidents Organization’s International Chapter.

Peter was an avid sportsman. As a child, and together with Biddy and his children, he loved stalking permit and tarpon off Florida, chasing swordfish off the Canyons of Nantucket on his boats Floater and Crazy Lady, or hunting wild boar and trophy white tail deer in southwest Texas.

Always active in his local community, Peter was a passionate supporter of programs that made a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. While living in Greenwich, he served as chairman of the local Chapter of the Red Cross, vice chairman of Greenwich Hospital, trustee of the Putnam School, and a director of the Chamber of Commerce. In Hobe Sound, he served as President of the Boys & Girls Club of Martin County, President of the Hobe Sound Community Chest, and a member of the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation’s Founder Society.

Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Biddy, daughter, Tarlton, and sister, Julia. He is survived by children Rachael, Peter (daughter-in-law Magda), and Carrie (son-in-law Mark Schroeder, step-grandsons David and Gregory), and his grandchildren, Matthew and Grace Morton and Peter, Andrew, and Jack Pauley.

A private service is scheduled for April 30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Martin County, 11500 SE Lares Ave, Hobe Sound, FL 33455 or the Hobe Sound Community Chest, 11450 SE Dixie Hwy, Hobe Sound, FL 33455.
