On Sunday, March 6, Angela Joan Maher, a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, friend and companion, passed away at The Whitney Center in Hamden, at the age of 84. Angela was born on Sept. 27, 1937 in Manhattan, NY to Pauline and Nicholas Petrillo. She and her parents lived on the Upper West Side until she entered high school when the family moved to Westchester. Angela graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1955 and attended Marymount University in Arlington and Good Counsel in White Plains. She began her career as a teacher in the New York Public school system. Angela and her husband Peter met in April of 1961 and were married on May 16, 1964. For a time, Angela continued teaching in CT at Riverside Elementary School, loved by students and fellow teachers. She then raised four children and worked as an office manager for 15 years, retiring in 1999. While living in Greenwich, Angela enjoyed playing tennis and golf. She loved to entertain and did so frequently in her home for family and friends. She was an active member in the church committees at St. Catherine’s Church and sang in their choir, even traveling to sing in Europe at Westminster and Canterbury Cathedrals.
Angela was a member of the Women’s garden club, and her floral designs garnered her prizes in competitions. An avid reader, she was always in a book club and ready to share a synopsis of her latest read. She also devoted her time to those in need by volunteering on Friday evenings for many years at a soup kitchen in Stamford. Angela loved art and art history, so after her kids went off to college and beyond, she volunteered her time as a docent at the Bush Holley House, a historical home in Greenwich, giving tours to visitors. Angela and Peter lived in Greenwich for 40 years until retirement, at which time they traveled extensively and moved to Hamden. When not traveling, they split their time between Hamden and Naples, FL.
Angela will be dearly missed by her family left behind; her husband Peter H. Maher; her children, Mary-Grey, Michelle, Maureen, Peter; and her grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas, Juliet, Devin, Alexandra, and Bridget.
