The First Congregational Church of Greenwich will host a Talk on the History of Old Greenwich with Historian Pat Larrabee, on Saturday January 17, 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the community at large. The church is located at 108 Sound Beach Avenue.
Old Greenwich, the oldest neighborhood in town, has a colorful and varied history. In a fascinating talk by our church historian and webmaster, Pat Fulkerson Larrabee, you will journey through centuries of stories that shaped this vibrant community.
From a wide variety of factories and sprawling farms to grand mansions and charming inns near the waterfront, Old Greenwich has always been a place of energy and transformation. The Revolutionary War soldiers in both of our cemeteries are listed to honor and support the big America 250 celebration this year. You will learn about Laddins Rock Farm with its tranquil pond, and a Hollywood connection — a film partially shot here, backed by media titan William Randolph Hearst. Once a hub of publishing, the neighborhood has also been home to a remarkable array of notable residents — some well-known and others unexpected — whose stories will both surprise and delight.
This talk is richly illustrated with a PowerPoint presentation filled with current and historic photographs, offering a captivating visual journey alongside the narrative.
The program does not include the Greenwich Point part of Old Greenwich, which was the subject of a separate historical tour created in 2015 by Sue Baker and Chris Franco for the Greenwich Historical Society’s celebration of the Town’s 375th Anniversary. Pat developed her Old Greenwich tour for that same milestone event and has since enhanced it with exciting new discoveries, making this a not-to-be-missed experience for history buffs and locals alike.
