Riverside Garden Club Wraps Up Busy Month of Community Service

Riverside Garden Club Garden Maintenance at Riverside Train Station.

By Riverside Garden Club

The Riverside Garden Club has been busy over the past month on two important and ongoing community endeavors. Stormy weather on October 30 did not prevent members of the Club from showing up bright and early on Halloween morning for the winterization of the Riverside Train Station Gardens. Ten members of RGC arrived at 9:30am, with rakes and gardening sheers in hand, ready to go. The gardens cover both the south and north sides of the train station and include a Pollinator, Japanese and Native Garden.

The RGC, one of the oldest garden clubs in New England, petitioned the New York and New Haven railroads for permission to beautify the Riverside Railroad Station back in 1920 and have been maintaining the gardens ever since.
“The Club is proud of its long history of maintaining these gardens for the enjoyment of Greenwich residents” said Ellen Brennan-Galvin, the RGC’s current president. “We look forward to continuing that tradition well into the future”.

The Club’s November meeting was devoted to creating beautiful holiday floral arrangements which were donated to the following organizations in our community: Eastern Middle School, Riverside School, North Mianus School, Hill House, River House Adult Day Center, Edgehill, Nathaniel Witherell, Cos Cob Library and Perrot Library. “Our hope is that these arrangements bring joy and beauty during the holiday season to the people who both live and work in these organizations” said Martha Marquand, the RGC’s Program Chair and the person who pulls this all together each and every year.
