Dr. Alan S. Kliger’s talk, highlights how dialysis transformed kidney failure from a fatal diagnosis into a treatable condition after congressional intervention ensured Medicare coverage for patients regardless of background. More recently, the emergence of drugs such as SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists has shifted the medical focus toward preventing kidney failure, offering significant new hope for slowing disease progression. Dr. Kliger stressed that financial incentives must evolve, as widespread adoption of these preventive treatments challenges the dialysis-centered economics of nephrology.
