The Town of Greenwich’s Emergency Management Department is closely monitoring a strong nor’easter that is forecast to impact Greenwich and the surrounding region starting Sunday afternoon and lasting through Monday.
With heavy rain and strong winds with gusts over 50 miles per hour, First Selectman Fred Camillo is advising residents to be careful and take precautions.
The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood watch beginning Sunday at 8 a.m. through Monday at 8 p.m. Residents should be prepared for potential coastal flooding as well as flooding along rivers and streams in Greenwich. The forecast currently calls for one to three inches of rain along with the potential for heavy winds, so residents should be ready for possible downed trees and power lines, which could result in power outages.
Eversource Energy has assured the Town that it is prepared for the potential impact of the storm and has a support number set up at 1-800-286-2000.
Greenwich residents should also be careful of potentially hazardous travel conditions during periods of heavy rain and strong wind. Residents should monitor the weather throughout the weekend to make sure they have the most up to date forecasts and should prepare by securing outdoor items like patio furniture, decorations and trash bins.
Residents should make sure their cell phones and personal electronics are charged in case of outages. The Margenot Atrium of the Greenwich Public Safety Complex will be open 24 hours for people to come in and charge small electronic devices if they need to.
During times of heavy rain, residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways. If you see a flooded roadway, remember the simple tip of “turn around, don’t drown.” If you see downed trees or wires, please call local authorities and do not approach them.
