Letter: Vote for all 6 Democrats for a BET that Works

Election season is here. While the Republican slate is still undecided, the disarray among the twelve candidates on two slates vying for the six spots on Row B shows a party in disorder. The infighting and factionalism don’t serve our community. Greenwich residents deserve a BET focused on one thing: sound, responsible financial management that includes long term planning to keep taxes low and predictable.

Our unified team brings decades of leadership and professional experience in municipal finance, risk management, investing, banking, accounting, and litigation. We also have a proven track record of community service on the Planning & Zoning Board of Appeals, the Board of Education, the RTM, and various non-profit boards in and outside of Greenwich.

We have the skills and qualifications to do the job right for all Greenwich residents. We are committed to transparency and we will collaborate respectfully. We stand by our values and our voting records. When Democrats held the BET majority after the 2017 election, the mill rate increase was 0% in year 1 and 2.75% in year 2 for an average of 1.4%, less than half of the 2.9% average under Republican BET control in the prior decade.

We’ve seen firsthand how the Republican-led BET has operated with division, disorder, and disregard for both expertise and public input. Their actions are often capricious, with last-minute motions that lack prior discussion or thorough analysis. They’ve even erased critical capital projects from long-term plans. This is not prudent fiscal management.

There is a better way. Our team of six is committed to making the BET functional, forward-thinking, and focused on shared community values.

It’s time for new leadership to end the dysfunction and to support Greenwich’s future. Vote for all six BET candidates on Row A by November 4th.

Elliot Alchek, Matt DesChamps, Laura Erickson, Doug Fenton, Stephen Selbst, David Weisbrod
