The Greenwich Department of Human Services Fund (GDHS Fund) announces its annual Boots & Shoes program, an initiative which aims to raise funds to provide gift cards to children between the ages of 5 and 15 from low-income families. These gift cards will be redeemable online and in store at any DSW location, allowing children to choose shoes that fit their needs and style.
Last year, 166 children benefited from Boots & Shoes, walking into the classroom proud and prepared. For many local families—struggling quietly in a community where affording new shoes may seem like a small, everyday choice—this program removes a barrier that can impact attendance, participation, and self-esteem.
“We live in a community where buying new shoes is a simple, routine decision—yet for some parents, even $50 is out of reach,” says Blaise Punturo who is the GDHS Fund’s President “By donating to Boots & Shoes, you’re not just purchasing footwear; you’re investing in a child’s sense of belonging and readiness to learn.”
Beginning July 7, community members can support the Boots & Shoes initiative in two easy ways: Online Donation: Visit greenwichdhsfund.org/bootsandshoes to make a secure gift. Every $50 donation directly funds one DSW gift card for a student in need.

“When we choose to purchase that extra pair of sneakers for summer sports or splurge on back-to-school gear, let’s remember that not every family can,” adds Punturo “A small gift today can spark a big difference in a child’s life tomorrow.”
In August 2025, the cards will be distributed to families in need, in time for back to school shopping, ensuring that every child can start the school year with confidence rather than worry about their shoes.
