Editorial: A Week of Gratitude

Sometimes a week comes along that reminds you of who you are and why you do what you do. This past week was that kind of week for us at The Greenwich Sentinel. It was not ordinary. It was extraordinary.

On Tuesday, the American Red Cross, an organization whose very name conjures acts of courage and comfort, presented us with its inaugural Community Champion Award during its annual meeting. The moment was quiet, dignified, and full of meaning.

They spoke of partnerships. Of lifting up a community. Of the power of stories to move hearts and hands. And they thanked us for helping them drive awareness, spark engagement, and highlight what it means to be prepared. To care before the crisis. To respond when the sirens stop.

It felt less like a lovely glass award and more like a blessing.

We are a small newspaper, but we are not a small voice. The Red Cross’s words reached into the center of what we try to do: shine a light, tell the truth, and celebrate the everyday goodness that lives all around us.

And just when we thought our hearts couldn’t be fuller, Wednesday arrived.

The Rotary Club of Greenwich, an organization that embodies “service above self,” stood and applauded our work. If you don’t know the Rotary well, you should. They’re the kind of group that quietly ensures scholarships happen, that coats get to the cold, that the hungry are fed and meals are delivered, that veterans are honored, that books f ind their way into eager hands. They are the engine behind so many acts of grace in this town.

They do these amazing things because they believe it’s the right thing to do.

It reminded us: community is a circle. What you give out comes back in ways you don’t expect. And when it does, you are left, as we were this week, grateful.

So, to the Red Cross, and to the Rotary, we say thank you. Not just for seeing us, but for letting us be part of your extraordinary work. Thank you for the reminder that this town we love is built on something strong and good.

And to our readers—thank you for letting us tell these stories and for engaging with them! Because that’s what this paper is: a mirror, a megaphone, and sometimes, if we’re lucky, a warm hand on the shoulder.

Greenwich is a place of intention. Of families who care and volunteers who show up. Of neighbors who still know each other’s names.

As one resident once said to us, “Greenwich is where good things quietly happen. God is moving in Greenwich.”

We try to carry that in our work. These awards inspire us to keep going, even when it is hard. Even when it means a few late nights in a row.

We’ll keep telling the stories that matter. Keep lifting up what’s beautiful, brave, and true.

Because when you live in a town like this, you don’t run out of reasons to be proud. You just run out of room on your pages.
