Greenwich Land Trust (GLT), in partnership with Greenwich Audubon Center and the Town of Greenwich, announces that a corridor of open space along the Byram River in northwest Greenwich (see map) has been designated a state-recognized greenway via unanimous approval by the Connecticut Greenways Council and CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection at their April meeting.
Greenway designation is an important distinction as it protects the ecological integrity of the area and promotes environmental stewardship and protection. Through the development of a new trail network, this partnership aims to provide enhanced outdoor recreational opportunities while protecting the conservation value of this important stretch of open space.
This corridor is comprised of Greenwich Land Trust’s Byram River Preserve and Lapham Preserve, along with adjacent conservation land owned by Greenwich Audubon Center and municipal land owned by the Town of Greenwich. The properties total 249 acres and stretch more than 2.75 miles, north to south. They encompass a rich tapestry of natural habitats, including meadows, woodlands, river bottoms, and riparian zones, providing vital ecological functions and habitats.
Additionally, they directly protect the water quality of the Byram River. Currently, access to these areas is limited.
Greenwich Land Trust will be working with Greenwich Audubon Center and the Town of Greenwich to establish a proposed trail linkage through this corridor.
