Greenwich United Way’s Reading Champions volunteers were honored this week at Athena Books in Old Greenwich. More than 120 volunteers served as one-on-on literacy tutors and mentors for more than 400 Greenwich Public Schools (GPS) students across all 11 public elementary schools in town and five after-school programs for the 2024-25 school year.

Athena Books hosted this year’s volunteer event where attendees met New York Times Bestselling author Georgia Hunter and received her latest release “One Good Thing.” Hunter is also the author of Penguin book turned Hulu series “We Were the Lucky Ones.”

For the past 17 years, the Reading Champions program has successfully motivated and nurtured emerging readers with the support of the largest early literacy volunteer team in Greenwich. Cultivating an interest in reading and lifelong love of books is something that Greenwich United Way volunteers recognize to be of real importance, making a lasting impact for the next generation.

“Reading Champions shares the value of positive experiences for young readers as a partner to GPS elementary Schools and local after school programs and shares the value of lifelong literacy through collaborations with Athena Books, a local small business that engages the community with insightful author events igniting active reading and thought,” said Cecile Meunier, Champions Program Manager for the Greenwich United Way.
