Red Cross ‘Safety Town’ Program Returns this June

The American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter announces registration for this year’s Safety Town is still open.

Safety Town is a comprehensive one-week safety education program offered every summer that teaches awareness and accident prevention skills to local children entering kindergarten or first grade in the fall. Children learn from experts through fun and interactive activities.
“Each year dozens of children complete Safety Town where they meet their community helpers and learn safety tips to help them in school and the community. After they learn, they are empowered to take action by practicing how to prepare for emergencies and sharing their lessons and new knowledge with family and friends. This program readies our youngest neighbors to help create a better prepared community and have a lot of fun in the process,” said Stephanie Dunn Ashley, CEO, American Red Cross Metro NY North Chapter.
Under guidance of Red Cross instructors, police officers, firefighters, EMS and other community helpers, children learn in an indoor classroom setting as well as on a specially designed kid-sized “Safety Town” layout.
Children are fitted with their own bike safety helmet that they use for the week and then take home to keep. They ride pedal cars, walk and “shop” through the town complete with buildings, crosswalks, sidewalks, and street markings. They also tour an ambulance, fire truck and police car.
Daily lessons are followed up with take-home handouts and additional reference information for parents and caregivers. At the end of each week of training, the graduates each received a Safety Town diploma.
The 2025 sessions will be held at the Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink, 1 Sue Merz Way, Greenwich, Conn., the week of June 16-20 and June 23-27. Morning sessions run 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon session from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Application is available online at: https://safetytown2025.givesmart.com
The cost is $225, which includes all materials and bike helmet. Scholarships available.
