Historic Knapps Tavern, currently known as Putnam Cottage, the bright red cottage on the Boston Post Road in downtown Greenwich, CT, recently held a Public Open House, on February 26, 2025 to commemorate the day of General Israel Putnam‘s famous 1779 ride down the Stone Steps to Fort Stamford where he rounded up soldier reinforcements from the encroaching British into Greenwich.
Knapps Tavern and Inn was a popular spot off the Post Road and was the frequent headquarters of the fearless Revolutionary War General, Israel Putnam. The Inn and Tavern entertained and was a gathering place for other esteemed visitors including George Washington, Lafayette and the Masons.
This National and recently designated Local Historic Landmark Property is held in trust by the Israel Putnam House Association (IPHA) since 1902. Putnam Cottage/Knapps Tavern is the only Historic Property in Greenwich still in its original location.
