“Learn Before You Leave” College Safety Panel is April 9

Members of Greenwich High School’s Rowan Center Student Advisory Board, in partnership with The Rowan Center and Greenwich Library, have organized a panel on college safety designed for current high school juniors and seniors and their families.

The second annual “Learn Before You Leave” will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 7-8 pm, at the Greenwich Library’s Marx Family Black Box Theater. Space is limited and advance registration (https://greenwichlibrary.libcal.com/event/14115765) is required.

Organized by Greenwich High School students Nora Stern (10th grade) and Ava Jackson (12th grade), “Learn Before You Leave” panelists will lead a candid discussion about preventing violence and staying safe on college campuses. Experts will present current data and real-world advice for both students and parents regarding college life and personal safety. The session will help facilitate open dialogue at home and among friends before students leave for college, and during their time away.

The panel will feature experts from Kids in Crisis, Sacred Heart University’s Department of Public Safety, The Rowan Center, and Fordham EMS. Ellen Brezovsky, LCSW, is Director of Outreach & Community Initiatives, Kids In Crisis. Gary MacNamara is Chief/Executive Director of Public Safety & Government Affairs, Sacred Heart University. Sarah Malhotra is Director of Education and Training, The Rowan Center. Colleen Sherry is Chief of Medical Operations, Fordham EMS.

Organizer Nora Stern says, “We piloted this program last year and the response was overwhelmingly positive. All of the partners agreed that we wanted to make this an annual event. We are thrilled to collaborate with the Greenwich Library again, and with our stellar line up of speakers.”

Organizer Ava Jackson says, “When we organized last year’s event, I was a high school junior. My parents and I really appreciated the information we received, even though college was more than a year away. The panel is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the range of resources available to students. And it stimulated a number of great conversations with my family. I encourage high school juniors and seniors to attend, and with their parents!”
