OpEd: BET Democrats Abandon Budget Talks

Democrats on the Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) took an unprecedented move when they stood up and walked out of the 2025 BET Budget Decision Day before a motion was made or a vote cast.

Republicans are working smartly to keep Greenwich affordable. Republicans came to the meeting ready to discuss reducing the rate of increase to the budget while still maintaining services and infrastructure.

It’s clear that Democrats are ready to support a nearly 6% tax increase over the current fiscal year budget.

Through their theatrics, Democrats have shown that they are not serious about discussing and finding town efficiencies. They support Greenwich taxpayers paying the largest budget increase in recent history – a budget of which is well over a half a billion dollars and climbing.

Democrats want runaway spending and have proposed substantial budget additions to a budget that will only increase the current and future taxpayer burden. None of the proposals should come as a surprise to any member of the BET. Most proposals were discussed in prior meetings, in public hearings, or in discussions among BET members.

Republicans remain committed to approving a budget that reflects common sense spending while keeping Greenwich affordable for all our town’s residents and taxpayers.
