The Legendary Yellow Cooler: A Meals-on-Wheels Time Capsule

The Yellow Coleman cooler

By Debra McLaughlin

If inanimate objects could talk, the bright yellow Coleman cooler in the Meals-on-Wheels, Inc. of Greenwich kitchen would have some stories to tell. This sturdy, sunshiny relic has been around since 1973, which means it’s been keeping meals warm (or cold) for over half a century. While it’s not the “original, original” cooler – let’s face it, the very first ones might have been made of wood and optimism – it’s about as close to a historical artifact as a food delivery vessel can get.

Legend has it that this cooler was once the chariot of choice for Greenwich’s most dedicated meal-delivering volunteers, back when bell-bottoms were in, disco was king, and Richard Nixon was still in the White House. It may not have Bluetooth, an app, or even wheels (ironically), but what it lacks in modern technology, it makes up for in reliability. It has survived decades of heavy lifting, countless potholes, and probably a few overenthusiastic drivers who took corners a little too fast. And yet, it persists.

These days, Meals-on-Wheels delivers over 27,000 meals a year, making sure seniors and homebound residents receive fresh, nutritious food. That’s a far cry from its humble beginnings in 1960 when volunteers delivered just 16 meals a day. The program has grown tremendously, and so has the demand – but through it all, this little yellow cooler has been a silent partner in the mission, ensuring meals arrive safe and sound.

Of course, Meals-on-Wheels has upgraded its equipment over the years. Today’s volunteers enjoy modern insulated containers that boast all the latest advancements in temperature control. But there’s something charming about the old faithful cooler sitting in the corner – a reminder of the countless hands that have carried it, the meals it has transported, and the generations of grateful recipients who have benefited from its service.
Will the cooler continue its noble duty for another 50 years? Maybe. Maybe not. But one thing’s for sure – if Meals-on-Wheels ever builds a museum, this yellow Coleman belongs in the Hall of Fame, preferably with a plaque that reads: “Delivering More Than Just A Meal – Since 1973.”
