Friends of Nathaniel Witherell continues its mission of enriching the lives of residents at The Nathaniel Witherell through the rotating gallery program. Each month, a new artist is featured, offering fresh perspectives and engaging artwork that connect the residents with the broader community. The initiative, led by Mary Tate, Director of Resident & Volunteer Services, ensures that the displayed art is accessible and meaningful, fostering joy and conversation among residents, families, staff, and volunteers.
Mary Tate carefully curates the gallery, booking artists months in advance. “I think it is important that our residents don’t see the same ol’ posters each day – each new show brings them a link to the outside world,” Tate explains. “I am careful in not securing any abstract art, as it can be confusing to the residents.” With approximately 20 pieces hung each month, the gallery space sees a steady flow of appreciation and even purchases, as residents often buy paintings to brighten their own rooms. All proceeds from the sales go directly to the artists, ensuring continued support for the local arts community.
This month, the gallery proudly features Carolyn Gamanos, a Greenwich-based art teacher whose whimsical paintings depict beloved scenes from around town. A Greenwich native, Gamanos pursued her passion for art at Pitzer College in California before returning home to teach and create. Her folk art-style paintings, crafted with gouache – a paint medium similar to watercolor – capture the charm of everyday life with a playful and nostalgic touch.
The Friends of Nathaniel Witherell is proud to showcase Gamanos’ work this month. With each new exhibit, the gallery continues to fulfill its goal of fostering connections, inspiration, and a sense of home for the residents of The Nathaniel Witherell.
