Letter: Debbie’s Inspiring Journey of Care and Compassion

To the Editor,

Friends of Nathaniel Witherell volunteer, Debbie Wortman

Friends of Nathaniel Witherell volunteer, Debbie Wortman, has a story of dedication, resilience, and a deep commitment to The Nathaniel Witherell worth sharing. For over two decades, Debbie served as a Registered Nurse at the facility, culminating her career as the head nurse on the first-floor long-term care unit. Her passion for working with the elderly shone brightly during her time there, leaving a lasting impact on residents and staff alike.

When Debbie retired, her connection to The Nathaniel Witherell transformed from professional to personal. She returned as a devoted family member to care for her mother, who had become a resident. This period deepened her bond with the facility and its community. After her mother’s passing, Debbie took time to grieve and heal, but the pull to return to The Nathaniel Witherell remained strong.

Now, Debbie is part of the Friends of Nathaniel Witherell as a volunteer bringing joy and companionship to residents. She is a vital part of the Wednesday bingo activity, helping residents manage their game cards and ensuring everyone feels included in the fun. For Debbie, returning as a member of the Friends of Nathaniel Witherell community, feels like coming home, a place where she continues to make a difference.

Debbie sees her volunteer work with the Friends of Nathaniel Witherell as enhancing the quality of life for residents at The Nathaniel Witherell – a cherished gem of Greenwich. Through her selfless service, she embodies the spirit of care and connection that is part of the Friends of Nathaniel Witherell and helps make the facility a special place for so many.
