To the Editor,
The RTM decision to reject MI status for the Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink is not about addressing flaws in the plan—it’s a blatant power grab. By rejecting a proposal that went through years of public hearings, professional input, and scrutiny by Planning and Zoning, certain RTM members are attempting to seize control of the process and dictate the outcome to suit their own interests.
The RTM is a legislative body, not a planning or development committee. Overturning MI status undermines the Town’s established processes and shifts decision-making authority to a group with neither the expertise nor the responsibility to manage complex projects like this. Their vote disregards the extensive work already done by rink users, town planners, and elected officials who followed the proper channels.
The call to form a building committee and restart the process is a thinly veiled attempt to insert handpicked individuals into key positions, consolidating influence under the guise of “oversight.” This tactic does nothing but delay progress, waste taxpayer dollars, and leave residents without the updated facility we desperately need.
