“I was saddened to hear about the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Sunday.
While I did not vote for him and certainly did not agree with many of his political views, I salute the 39th President for his years of service to our country on many levels. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving as an executive officer, engineering officer and electronics repair officer aboard submarines, which included time here in Connecticut.
After his service in the Navy, he was a member of the state senate in Georgia and then was elected governor of the state before being elected to the Presidency in 1976. President Carter and I might have been in different political parties, but he served the country with honor and I believe his commitment to service to others after his presidency is his greatest legacy.
From building houses for the poor to advocating for democracy abroad, Jimmy Carter never stopped working and never stopped trying to make a difference. For that alone he will be remembered fondly.”
