Lt. Glen Krizan is retiring after 29 years of service, and Firefighter Kent Fawcett, the most senior member of Greenwich Professional Firefighters, is retiring after 37 years. Both have significantly contributed to the Town of Greenwich and Local 1042.
Greenwich Emergency Teams Enhance Preparedness
On Friday, July 26th, the Greenwich Police Department, EMS, and Fire Department conducted a training exercise for emergency preparedness. The drill involved an Active Shooter scenario where they practiced triaging and evacuating victims.

Greenwich Celebrates ADA Anniversary Milestone
This past Wednesday, a crowd gathered outside the former US Post Office, now Restoration Hardware, to mark the 34th anniversary of President George H.W. Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event included local officials and members of the ADA & Advocacy Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities. Camillo, alongside local officials and committee members, emphasized the importance of continuing ADA advocacy and implementing accessibility projects in the community.
Greenwich Seeks Proposals for Havemeyer Redevelopment
On Wednesday, the town released a Request for Proposals (RFP) to redevelop the historic Havemeyer Building on Greenwich Avenue, originally constructed in 1892 as a public school and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The RFP seeks developers who will respect the building’s architectural heritage while fostering economic and community benefits. Proposals are due by November 15, 2024.

Greenwich Chabad Expansion Plans Progress
At the recent Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, Chabad Lubavitch of Greenwich’s proposal to expand and renovate their property at 38 Field Point Road was discussed, with a primary focus on parking concerns. The property, bought from First Lutheran Church for $10.7 million, currently has 20 parking spaces, with plans to increase this to 24. The proposed renovations include reconfiguring the building to accommodate a sanctuary, classrooms, offices, and a mikvah.
Old Greenwich Tackles Feral Cat Issue
Residents of Old Greenwich have raised concerns about an increasing number of feral cats. First Selectman Fred Camillo and the Town of Greenwich Animal Control Division are working with property owners to address the issue. Camillo emphasized the importance of spaying and neutering pets and assured ongoing collaboration with Animal Control to manage such situations. New Restaurant Proposed for Cos Cob
Mike’s Organic in Cos Cob closed in March, leaving its space vacant. TPF Development Corp. has applied to convert the site at 600 E. Putnam Ave. into a restaurant. The application lacks details on the restaurant’s specifics and awaits review by the Greenwich Planning & Zoning Commission.
Cos Cob Blood Drive August 5th
The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in Cos Cob on August 5th, from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., at Greenwich Reform Synagogue, 92 Orchard Street. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins will be accommodated if space permits. Sign up online or call 1-800-733-2767.
Greenwich Plans New Byram River Trail
Will Kies, executive director of the Greenwich Land Trust, plans to collaborate with local organizations to develop a 2.5-mile trail along the Byram River. This proposed trail would utilize land owned by the trust, Greenwich Audubon, and the town, linking various natural habitats. The next step involves securing town government approval, with hopes to begin the design process after receiving the greenway designation next year.

Constantino’s Now Open
Constantino’s Pasta Bowls, located at 160 Hamilton Ave. in Greenwich, offers customizable pasta bowls and various Italian dishes. The family-owned restaurant, which seats 14, opened on July 5 with a grand opening on July 27. It operates Monday-Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm and Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm.
Undies Project Hosts Fundraiser Event

Greenwich United Way Seeks Reading Volunteers
Greenwich United Way is seeking volunteers for its Reading Champions program, which supports literacy among elementary students. The program, now in its 16th year, provided one-on-one tutoring to 350 students with the help of 120 volunteers during the 2023-2024 school year. Two new sites will be added in fall 2024 to further support students, including those learning English as a second language.
Heather Gaudio Hosts International Art Exhibition

Greenwich Launches Grow-A-Row Produce Donation Program
Greenwich residents can now donate homegrown produce to help those in need through the “Grow-A-Row” program, a partnership between Waste Free Greenwich and Food Rescue US – Fairfield County. Donations can be brought to the Old Greenwich Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at Living Hope Community Church. The collected produce is delivered to Neighbor to Neighbor to support local hunger relief efforts.
Kids in Crisis Hosts Annual Tea Dance
Kids in Crisis will host its second annual Tea Dance on September 8 to raise funds for LGBTQ+ youth programs. The event, held at Foundation House, will feature a DJ, gourmet food, and fashion-themed activities. Proceeds will benefit Lighthouse, a Kids in Crisis program offering peer support for LGBTQ+ youth. Volunteers Support Refugee Children at Back-to-School Event
Last Monday night, volunteers Shep McGovern ’27, William Baxter ’22, John Popescu ’28, Ryan Baxter ’26, Luke Spada ’28, and Giancarlo Cuesta ’28 participated in Jewish Family Services’ Back-to-School Refugee Resettlement event. They distributed school supplies and played soccer with the children. The event supported refugee families preparing for the school year.
GCDS Seniors Honored with Personalized Bricks
The GCDS Class of 2024 continues the tradition of receiving personalized bricks engraved with their names and graduation year. These bricks are placed in the walkway above the playing field at the Stanwich Road campus. This custom commemorates the students and signifies their lasting connection to the school.

Greenwich’s Beth Yeager Competes in Olympics
Beth Yeager from Greenwich competed in women’s field hockey for Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. On Wednesday, July 31, her team played against Australia and lost. Yeager, a Princeton University student and Sacred Heart Greenwich alumna, has been named to three national teams and received numerous Ivy League honors.
Greenwich Swimmer Gretchen Walsh Shines at Olympics
Gretchen Walsh, a former Greenwich youth swimmer, placed eighth in the women’s 100-meter freestyle at the Paris Olympics, finishing with a time of 53.04 seconds. She has already won two silver medals at these Games in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay and the 100-meter butterfly. Walsh, who trained in Greenwich with her sister Alex, will compete in the 50-meter freestyle on Saturday, August 3.
Alex Walsh Competes in 200m Medley at Olympics
Alex Walsh, sister of Gretchen Walsh, olympic swimmer, and former Greenwich resident competed in the 200 meter Individual Medley this past Friday, August 2. Results not available at time of publishing.
Isabella Russekoff Represents Israel in Olympic Equestrian Jumping
Isabella Russekoff and her horse CVier are representing Israel in the 2024 Olympics in Paris as alternate athletes on the equestrian jumping team. Russekoff, a 2018 Sacred Heart Greenwich graduate and University of Miami alum, moved to Europe to train full-time after college. She announced her Olympic selection on June 26.
Greenwich High’s Payton Foster Earns Triple All-America Honors
Greenwich High School’s Payton Foster earned NISCA All-America honors in three events, including the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle, with standout performances at the CIAC State Open Championships. The school’s 200-yard medley relay team, featuring Foster, also received All-America accolades. Coached by Brendan Heller, the Cardinals had a remarkable season, securing team titles at the State Open, Class LL, and FCIAC Championships.
Greenwich Boys Swim Team Wins Triple Championship
The Greenwich High School boys swimming team triumphed this past winter, winning the CIAC State Open, Class LL, and FCIAC championships. Luke Mendelsohn, Jake Melley, Felix Flakstad, and Kegan Clark earned All-America honors with a time of 1:24.77 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, ranking 95th in the nation. Coached by Terry Lowe, the Cardinals have secured the State Open title for 10 consecutive seasons and 38 times overall.

Greenwich Registrars Host Open House on Election Security

Mystic Aquarium Releases Rehabilitated Seals
Mystic Aquarium released four rehabilitated seals, named Cavatelli, Orecchiette, Sealy-San, and Tortellini, at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison. The seals were rescued earlier this year, treated for severe infections, lacerations, and entanglement injuries. Mystic’s Animal Rescue Program, which covers 1,000 miles of coastline, facilitated their recovery, with each seal’s treatment costing approximately $10,000.
