Brunswick clinched its second-ever undefeated varsity lacrosse regular season – and first under coaches David Bruce and Brendan Gilsenan – with an 11-5 win over Staples on Tuesday afternoon.
The first quarter ended in a 1-1 stalemate. There was no shot clock, so it was a quarter of long possessions for the Wreckers and great defense for the Bruins.
Staples scored quickly to start the second and that was its last of the half. Brunswick’s offense found its footing and got six goals past a strong Staples’ goalie. Casey Quinson and Payton Anderson led the charge, helping give the Bruins a 7-2 advantage at halftime.
Brunswick controlled play in the third quarter with three goals to the host team’s zero. The Bruins used the lack of shot clock to their advantage and ran long offensive possessions. The third quarter ended with Brunswick holding a 10-2 lead.
After few goals from the Wreckers in the fourth and the Bruins’ lone goal thanks to a hard drive to the net by Emmett Meagher, Brunswick’s sideline had plenty to celebrate as time expired on the regular season.
Focus now shifts to the semi-finals of the Prep Nationals Tournament on Friday night, when the Bruins will take to Cosby Field in the 7:30 p.m. slot. They will play Salisbury School in the Friday’s semifinal-round of the Prep Nationals.
