Christina Downey, the Newly Elected Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee (DTC)

Christina Downey, former Vice-Chair of the Board of Education is the new DTC Chair, taking over for Joe Angland.

Christina Downey, the newly appointed Chairman of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee (DTC), is leading the party with an ambitious vision, particularly as the 2024 elections approach. Downey, a former legal professional and active member of the Board of Education, has evolved from an unaffiliated voter to a prominent Democratic leader.

Downey’s journey into politics was ignited by the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election, a period that saw a significant rise in female political activism. “I saw that this was the path I wanted to take too,” Downey remarked, reflecting on the impact of women rising up to effect change in the political sphere.

As a recent member of the Board of Education, Downey’s tenure, which included a vice-chair position, highlighted her belief in the power of active community engagement. “We as Democrats need to advocate for our values and priorities to make our town the best possible version of itself,” Downey stated, emphasizing the necessity for local advocacy and political action.

In our interview, Downey revealed her aspirations for the Democratic Party in Greenwich. She expressed enthusiasm for the new energy and engagement within the party, particularly among younger members. “We want to find ways to channel all that positive energy and frankly, to get our candidates elected,” Downey asserted, recognizing the essential role of the town party in influencing elections.

Downey also highlighted the importance of the upcoming state legislative races, including the 36th Senate seat, which she anticipates to be particularly compelling. Her role as the chairman of the DTC places her at the forefront of these critical elections, where she aims to leverage her experience and skills in organizing and communication.

The goals for the Greenwich Democratic Party under Downey’s leadership are multifaceted. One primary objective is to expand the party’s membership, particularly by engaging those who have remained politically passive. “I would love to build our membership ranks,” Downey said, acknowledging the potential to strengthen the party’s foundation through increased participation.

Another key focus for Downey is enhancing the party’s branding and communication efforts. She said the DTC’s Communications Team has already made strides in this area, disseminating a regular newsletter that covers various topics and educates voters. “We’re educating our voters in the process, providing that service to the community,” Downey noted, emphasizing the importance of an informed and active electorate.

Downey’s approach to leadership is inclusive and collaborative, emphasizing the value of open dialogue and respect within the party. She encourages participation from all interested individuals, especially young residents who have shown increased political engagement post-pandemic. “Our meetings are open to the public, and we’d love any registered Democrats in particular to come to our meetings and see if you like it and consider joining us,” Downey invited, seeking to broaden the party’s appeal and impact.
