The earthquake that occurred this morning at 10:23 AM, with its epicenter near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, was likely a magnitude 4.8 event. For more detailed information, please refer to the US Geological Survey’s official earthquake map at earthquake.usgs.gov. Aftershocks may occur.

In the wake of the earthquake Greenwich, like much of the East Coast, felt its tremors. Early estimates of the earthquake’s magnitude ranged from 4.7 to 5.5. While there have been no reports of structural damage in Greenwich, cautionary measures were taken, notably the relocation of Central Middle School students to Greenwich High School. This decision was made purely as a precaution, with the safety of the students in mind. Fortunately, there have been no injuries reported, and the transition was conducted smoothly and safely.

The Greenwich Public Schools District has been proactive in communicating with parents regarding the situation. Additionally, the Greenwich Police Department (GPD) has deployed extra officers around the areas of Hillside Road and East Putnam Avenue to manage any potential traffic issues that might arise due to this relocation.

It is important to note that the school is not dismissed but merely relocated. The GPD urges the public to avoid the area to prevent worsening traffic conditions. The GPD reports that it is well-equipped to handle this situation and other calls for service.

Deputy Chief Mark E. Zuccerella from the Greenwich Police Department provided these updates. For more details, you can visit the GPD’s Twitter feed at GreenwichCTPD.
