On Friday, the town of Greenwich marked Greek Independence Day with a flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall. This event, not directly connected to Greece but significant in its commemoration, drew attention to the historical importance of Greece’s struggle for independence from Ottoman rule.
Karen Fassuliotis, Vice Chair of the Greenwich Board of Estimate and Taxation, who played a key role in organizing the event, provided insights into the historical background. She cited March 25, 1821, as a pivotal date when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised a flag at the Monastery of Agia Lavra, signaling the start of the Greek fight against Turkish control. Fassuliotis emphasized the revolutionary slogan “Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος” — “Freedom or death” — which became synonymous with the Greek struggle for independence.
Now an annual event in Greenwich, the ceremony has seen growing interest over the past few years. “This occasion has significantly evolved since its first observance four years ago,” said Fassuliotis. The previous year’s event witnessed over 100 attendees, and similar participation was expected this year, aided by good weather.
The Greek War of Independence, initiated in 1821, ended centuries of Ottoman occupation and led to the establishment of Greece as an autonomous state by 1830. The flag-raising in Greenwich serves to acknowledge this crucial period in Greek history, celebrating the nation’s heritage and the universal values of freedom and self-determination.
This event in Greenwich underscores the broader importance of recognizing significant historical events, even those from different cultures or countries. It highlights the town’s interest in global history and its commitment to acknowledging the fight for freedom and independence across the world.
In addition to honoring Greek history, the ceremony at Greenwich Town Hall is a testament to the town’s dedication to cultural diversity and its efforts to engage the community in global historical narratives. It shows how local events can create awareness and foster a sense of connection with international struggles and achievements.
In sum, the Greek Independence Day flag-raising ceremony at Greenwich Town Hall serves as a symbolic act of remembrance and respect for Greece’s historical journey towards independence. It also reflects the town’s commitment to cultural awareness and the recognition of the universal quest for freedom and national sovereignty.
