According to a statement issued by the Greenwich Police Department approved by the Board of Education, Western Middle School went into lockdown this morning following an unauthorized entry. The incident, which occurred at around 8:35 AM during student arrivals, prompted immediate action from the Greenwich Police Department (GPD). An individual, who was not armed and appeared non-threatening, was apprehended and taken into custody.
The school remained in lockdown even after the individual was detained. GPS security, in collaboration with GPD, initiated a review of security footage from inside and around the school to track the individual’s path.
In a subsequent step, the school instituted a ‘shelter in place’ protocol, effectively limiting access into and out of the building. This action was taken to facilitate GPD’s completion of their investigative procedures on the premises.
Details about the identity and motives of the intruder, as well as how they gained entry to the school, are still under investigation. Information regarding any charges to be filed against the individual has not been released.
In response to the incident, the school communicated promptly with parents and guardians, ensuring them of the students’ and staff’s safety. Additionally, the school district announced the availability of counseling services for those impacted by the event.
The ongoing investigation by the Greenwich Police Department continues to shed light on the security breach at Western Middle School. Updates on the situation are expected as more information becomes available, and local news sources remain a key resource for further developments.
