Rob Mathes Kicks Off ‘The Loft’ at Christ Church

Christ Church is set to launch a casual, come-as-you-are worship service named “The Loft” on Sunday, February 25. This initiative, a collaboration between The Rev. Marek Zabriskie and renowned musician Rob Mathes, marks a significant step in reimagining Sunday worship with a strong focus on musical excellence.

“We are extraordinarily blessed to have Rob, Anna, and this group of talented musicians join us for this kickstart of The Loft services,” Rev. Marek Zabriskie said. “We are bustling on Sunday mornings, but not everyone can make Sunday mornings. This is another offering to bring people closer to God, wherever they are on their spiritual journey. This is also for people who are seeking an alternative that melds faith with contemporary life.”

Mathes is well-know n for his annual Rob Mathes Holiday Concert, a tradition in the New York City/Connecticut area for over 30 years, displaying his profound connection to the local community. His artistry extends beyond these concerts, with collaborations with luminaries such as Sting, Bruce Springsteen, and Elvis Costello. Mathes’ extensive resume includes directing the New York Philharmonic, orchestrating for Broadway hits like “Hamilton,” and producing records like Melissa Errico’s “Sondheim Sublime.” His involvement in The Loft is expected to bring a unique blend of spiritual and musical depth to the services.

Eggers speaks highly of the collaboration with local musicians, including Mathes. “Marek has been fantastic about engaging local musicians in conversation about this because we want to do it right,” she says. Mathes’ participation as well as other accomplished musicians such as Anna and Bob Lineback underscore the church’s commitment to integrating high-quality music within its worship framework.

Rob Mathes’ role in The Loft is particularly noteworthy, uniquely positioned to influence the worship experience through music. His ability to blend genres and styles promises to elevate the spiritual experience for attendees.

The Loft also represents a contemporary take on traditional services like Compline, known for their meditative and musical qualities. However, it distinguishes itself by incorporating a broader range of musical styles and a more relaxed setting, aligning with modern sensibilities while maintaining a connection to liturgical roots.
