Discussion to Focus on Climate Resilience Through Native Plant Landscaping

On Thursday, February 22, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., the Greenwich Land Trust (GLT) will host an insightful discussion titled “Building Ecological Climate Resilience Through Native Plant Landscaping.” This event, led by GLT’s Director of Conservation and Outreach, Dan Brubaker, aims to shed light on the pivotal role native plants can play in fortifying landscapes against the adverse impacts of climate change.

Native plant landscaping is increasingly recognized as a vital strategy for enhancing ecological resilience in the face of a changing climate. While not a panacea for broader climate challenges, native plants offer a powerful tool for promoting biodiversity and mitigating the detrimental effects of environmental degradation.

Dan Brubaker underscores the urgency of rethinking traditional landscaping practices, emphasizing that “we can no longer afford to have our home landscapes be ecological deserts.” He contends that transforming conventional notions of beauty in lawn, garden, and public space aesthetics is essential for fostering landscapes that are not just visually appealing but also ecologically functional. In partnership with Greenwich Grown and Coffee for Good, this program will convene at GLT’s Mueller Preserve, offering participants an opportunity to delve into practical strategies for integrating native plants into their surroundings.

The significance of native plant landscaping in bolstering ecological resilience has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Research on this topic highlights the manifold benefits of native plant ecosystems, from their capacity to support pollinator populations to their role in enhancing soil health and water retention.

Previous initiatives spearheaded by GLT have demonstrated the transformative potential of native plant landscaping in mitigating climate-related challenges. Through collaborative efforts with local communities and environmental organizations, GLT has successfully implemented native plant restoration projects, showcasing the tangible benefits of embracing indigenous flora in landscaping practices.
