Volunteer Engagement, what is it? It is defined as fostering a sense of community involvement and giving people the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.
And why is it important? Because it builds communities, offers hands-on impact, develops skills, provides a place of shared values and the expression of appreciation.
Nowhere is this more visible than at Meals-on-Wheels, Inc. of Greenwich which relies heavily on volunteers. And this aspect is at the core of what makes the organization exceptional.
Meals-on-Wheels was fortunate enough to work with volunteers from Greenwich Country Day School recently. Austin Lehn, the school’s Center for Public Good Assistant Director, held a three-week January mini-term course for students called Hungry for Change. During the course, students had opportunities to cook, organize, and serve meals to support organizations that fight food insecurity. These volunteer engagement opportunities broaden students’ perspectives and experiences. How do we know this? Because Meals-on-Wheels, Inc. of Greemwich received the most thoughtful reflection from Avery, a student participating in Hungry for Change addressed to our Director of Operations.
