Chief Heavey Issues Community Challenge for 100th Blood Donation Milestone

Chief Jim Heavey will be making his milestone 100th blood donation at a ‘Battle of the Badges’ blood donation drive in Greenwich on Saturday, December 2. In honor of this legacy of donating blood, Chief Heavey and the American Red Cross are calling on the Greenwich community to schedule 100 new blood donation appointments.

The Battle of the Badges blood drive on December 2 will take place at theGreenwich Public Safety Complex (aka the New Greenwich Police Department), located at 11 Bruce Place. It will run from 8:00am until 1:45pm, with Chief Heavey expecting to make his donation around 8am.

Chief Jim Heavey said: “My 100th blood donation isn’t about me, but it is about the opportunity we all have to give the gift of life to others. Join me to help save lives. I hope to see many of you on December 2 or elsewhere throughout the holiday season donating blood.”

American Red Cross Metro New York North CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley said: “Chief Heavey has been such an amazing role model for giving back, whether it is his work with the Red Cross as a board member, his legacy of blood donation, or his service to Greenwich with the police, as a volunteer firefighter and as a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts. We would all do well to follow his lead, and I think there’s no better way to do that than by signing up to donate blood.”

Those wishing to make a blood donation in honor of Chief Heavey’s milestone donation can sign up for an appointment at the December 2 Battle of the Badges by visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) and using the sponsor code GREENPOLICE, or they can use this BloodLink (rcblood.org/3Qc4zGw) to schedule an appointment between November 1 and December 31, 2023.

• In November, donors can join the Red Cross to create cheer and celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the film Elf while they make giving blood a holiday tradition! Those who come to give Nov. 10-30 will receive an exclusive pair of Elf and Red Cross socks, while supplies last.

• All who come to give Dec. 1-17 will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email. Visit RedCrossBlood.org/Amazon for details.

• All donors who come to give Dec. 18-Jan. 5 will get a long-sleeved Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.

Battle of the Badges builds camaraderie among local first responders through a friendly competition to see who can recruit the most blood donors. When you donate, you can choose to donate in honor of your favorite first responders: Police, Fire, or EMS. At the end of the day, the score will be tallied.

Chief Heavey, who is also a Board Member of the American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter, currently serves as the Chief of Police of the Greenwich Police Department. He has been a full-time police officer since 1986, serving as Greenwich Police Chief since 2011. He became a first aid instructor as a teenager and was a volunteer with disaster and emergency services with the Red Cross through high school and college.
