Local election officials reported a significant surge in voter turnout at this year’s Municipal Election, with more than half of the eligible voters showing up at the polls.
The 2023 municipal election saw a 50.82% voter turnout, as confirmed by election authorities, with 19,727 of the 38,814 registered voters casting their ballots. This substantial increase from the 40% turnout in 2021 and the 47% in 2019 indicates a rising trend of civic participation among Greenwich residents.
Observers suggest that the sharp uptick may be attributed to the residents’ growing engagement in local issues, such as education, affordable housing, and the recent debates surrounding the Board of Estimate and Taxation and schools funding. Additionally, the rise in community members vying for seats on the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) likely fueled a grassroots push to mobilize voters.
Throughout Election Day, a consistent stream of voters was reported at polling stations around the town, maintaining a robust turnout until the closing of polls at 8:00 p.m.
Election workers began the task of vote counting immediately after the closure of the polling stations. The Greenwich Sentinel is committed to delivering the unofficial results as soon as they become available.
