
Greenwich Police captured a burglary suspect early Sunday morning — after he caused a head-on collision with the responding officer.
On Sunday, Oct. 29, at approximately 5 a.m., the Greenwich Police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle that had backed up to the rear doors of Saks Fifth Avenue at 205 Greenwich Ave. Further, it was reported that a subject was attempting to pull open the rear doors of the store.
When the officer arrived at the scene, he saw a vehicle matching the described suspicious vehicle attempting to flee the area. The vehicle was being driven erratically, including traveling on the wrong side of the roadway. The suspect vehicle then collided head-on with the police car, damaging and disabling both vehicles.

The suspect attempted to back up and flee the scene but his car was too badly damaged. He initially refused the officer’s direction to get out of the vehicle but eventually complied and was taken into custody. He had in his possession a “Scream” movie mask, gloves, and a screwdriver. In addition, the rental car he was driving had all the identifying rental markings and the VIN covered with tape, and the registration plates did not belong to it.
The suspect was identified as Anthony M. Vasquez, 35 years old, of Queens, N.Y. Vasquez has a lengthy criminal history and was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of his arrest.
Vasquez was charged with Possession of Burglar Tools, Attempted Burglary, and Criminal Trover. He was also hit with multiple motor vehicle charges, including Improper Turn, Failure to Obey Traffic Signal, Illegal Operation of Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs, Improper Use of Registration Plates, Reckless Operation, Disobeying Direction of Officer, and Evading Responsibility.
Vasquez was unable to post a $50,000 bond and was held at the Greenwich Police Department until he could be transported to Stamford Superior Court. His initial court date is Nov. 13, 2023, at the Stamford Superior Court.
