Greenwich Board of Selectmen holds second monthly meeting

Last Thursday, more than a dozen people attended the Town of Greenwich Board of Selectmen’s second monthly meeting held at the Greenwich Town Hall Meeting Room on Field Point Road that mimicked much of the crisp energy of the fresh autumn season.

This meeting, lead by First Selectman Fred Camillo, Selectman Lauren Rabin and Select Person Janet Stone McGuigan, commenced with everyone in the room saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

From there, the Board of Selectmen went on to address the following list of local news and issues:

-The Byram Veterans Association, located on 300 Delavan Avenue in Greenwich, celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a celebratory dinner at T&J’s Italian Restaurant in Port Chester, New York in September.

-The St. Lawrence Society, based on Valley Road in Cos Cob, will be celebrating its 100th year anniversary at its headquarters on October 9th with a commemorative dinner that will also honor Columbus Day.

At 9am that morning, there will be a raising of the Italian flag to honor the St. Lawrence Society’s Centennial Celebration and Columbus Day at Greenwich Town Hall that will be followed by a light breakfast held at the St. Lawrence Society at 10am.

“We’ll be celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the St. Lawrence Society which donates and helps the community. Their dinner is always a fun night,” said First Selectman Camillo.

-A Town Service Award was recently given to Lynn Curcio who has worked as an Account Clerk for the Town of Greenwich for 45 years.

-The 14th Annual Children of Fallen Patriots Greenwich Gala will be held at the Riverside Yacht Club on Saturday, November 3rd.

This event of patriotic generosity honors Gold Star families with a Fallen Patriots presentation, guest speakers, including Sargeant Major of the Army Michael R. Weimer, the 2023 Patriot Award Recipient, a live auction and a live appeal for the Fund-A-Scholarship, along with dinner and cocktail hour.

“It’s a great organization and a great cause,” said First Selectman Camillo.

-Geraldine Christophersen of Greenwich, who is also known as ‘Gerry,’ celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday, September 26th, a day that was proclaimed as ‘Geraldine Christophersen Day’ by First Selectman Camillo and the Town of Greenwich in her honor.

-The YWCA will be holding its annual ‘Walk the Walk Against Domestic Violence’ at Bruce Park on Sunday October 1st in support of October being cited as Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness Month.

This event, being held for its fifth year running, is slated to start at 830am at the Bruce Park picnic area. Individuals interested in participating either as a walker or supporter of a walker can register for the event the through the Greenwich YWCA website at: www.ywcagrn.org/walkthewalk.

-The annual Binney Park community cleanup took place on Saturday September 29th from 9am to 12pm. This event drew dozens of residents from in and around the town who helped clean up this beautiful Old Greenwich outdoor locale.

-On Thursday, October 5th, Mary Hull, the dynamic and ever-dedicated longtime co-founder of Greenwich Green & Clean will be honored by the Glenville Volunteer Fire Company with the David N. Theis Award for Outstanding Community Service at the Tamarack Country Club.

This event, slated to start at 6pm, will honor Hull, who has been committed, for many years, to helping maintain and preserve the town’s beauty and character through Greenwich Green & Clean, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create a cleaner and more beatific environment for everyone to live and work in.

-On Wednesday, October 25th, the 2023 Breast Cancer Alliance Luncheon and Fashion Show will be held at Westchester Country Club.

This event, titled ‘Seize the Day,’ will commence at 11am with a welcome cocktail reception and follow with a lunch featuring a guest speaker, an auction and a fashion show presented by Richards with models of inspiration.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Town of Greenwich, in its annual tradition, will be raising the Breast Cancer Alliance flag outside of Greenwich Town Hall in recognition and honor of it.

-The Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich will feature Christopher Shays, who served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Connecticut’s 4th District from 1987-2009 as its featured speaker on Wednesday, October 4th at the First Presbyterian Church on 1 West Putnam Avenue.

Shays discussion at this event, which will start at 11am, is titled ‘We Have a Democracy If We Can Keep It.’

-The Foodshed Forum will be holding a panel discussion at the Greenwich Town Hall Meeting Room on Tuesday, October 10th from 7pm to 830pm on food insecurity.

-This forum, titled ‘A Tale of Two Towns: Addressing Food Insecurity in Greenwich,’ is free and reservations for the event can be made by emailing ali@thefoodshednetwork.org

Other topics that were also covered and addressed by First Selectman Fred Camillo, Selectman Lauren Rabin and Select Person Janet Stone McGuigan at this meeting included discussions in regard to the renovations of Old Greenwich Elementary School and Central Middle School, among other matters.

The next Board of Selectmen’s meeting will be held on Thursday October 12th at the Greenwich Town Hall Meeting Room at 10am.
