Eliot Spizzirri, the talented University of Texas tennis star who was born in Greenwich, has been making a memorable mark at the 2023 U.S. Open Grand Slam Tournament this past week, having triumphantly advanced through the first two rounds of the Men’s Singles competition in grand style.
This talented 21 year-old University of Texas (UT) senior, whose hometown is also listed as Greenwich on both his ATP Tour and UT bios, has been generating tremendous buzz at this event, as he is a U.S. Open Wild Card entry who, in a truly valiant run so far, has defeated Matteo Gigante of Italy (who has an ATP men’s singles ranking of 167) 6-4, 7-6, 6-1 in the first round this past Wednesday and Aleksandar Kovacevic of the United States (who has an ATP men’s singles ranking of 122) 6-4, 6-4 in the second round on Friday.
This driven and accomplished athlete certainly has a remarkable competitive resume to back up these incredible results so far, for certain.
Spizzirri, the 2019 U.S. Open Junior Doubles Champion with Tyler Zink, was just this past year named as the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Player of the Year and was the 2022/2023 number one-ranked player in the ITA singles rankings, among other things.
On Saturday at 10am, Spizzirri will continue his quest at Flushing Meadows, where he will face off against Emilio Nava of the United States (who has an ATP Men’s Singles Ranking of 155) in Round Three of the U.S. Open.
