Every July stores all along Greenwich Avenue and neighboring streets open their doors to host hundreds of shoppers for the annual Greenwich Sidewalk Sales, this year for the 64th time. The sales go all day, rain or shine from Thursday to Sunday.
Over 120 stores participate yearly, up and down the Ave turning out their best deals while pop-ups fill out empty stretches of sidewalk. This year Cutco, a personalization studio and Venture Photography lined up next to each-other with white tents in front of the Greenwich Arts Council to showcase and sell their products. Romp, selling backpacks, was another pop-up. In front of the Board of Education building, Greenwich Library also had representatives to speak to about new books and Library events, as well as to sell journals.
Stores were bustling with shoppers, some of the more popular being Shoes n’ More, LoveShack Fancy, Vineyard Vines, and Boll and Branch. Some stores create a combination indoor/outdoor shopping and sales experience, while others may have just one or the other, like Zara.
The spirit of sidewalk sales isn’t just confined to Greenwich Avenue, often other stores off of the Avenue host sales as well, such as Threads and Treads and Metro Mattress with a raffle for several giveaway items. Lots of restaurants such as Versailles also had happy hour for shoppers to cool off and relax after hours of shopping.
Parking was more sparse than usual as cars lined the Avenue and side streets hoping to score a spot.
Some stores even hosted their first ever sales, such as Express Edit and La Ligne.
“It’s a great time to shop for bargains, discover new stores and to experience a true shopping extravaganza,” says Greenwich Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Marcia O’Kane. “Shop at your favorite stores and discover new ones.” The event is presented by the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, with this year’s exclusive sponsor being Orthopedic and Neurosurgery Specialists. According to the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, “Sidewalk Sale is the largest outdoor sales event in all of Connecticut, encompassing four full consecutive days of bargains.”
