Volunteers from the Junior League of Greenwich (JLG) new member class recently partnered with Parsonage Cottage Senior Residence to revitalize garden beds on the Cottage’s grounds. Parsonage Cottage’s Chef Daniel Hernandez often uses vegetables from the garden to cook for the residents. When the JLG approached Parsonage Cottage Executive Director Penny Lore about an environmentally beneficial project, she stated that re-energized and improved garden beds immediately came to mind. Lore suggested kitchen herb gardens to enhance Chef Daniel’s delivery of healthy and nutritious meals. “Parsonage Cottage is highly appreciative of the effort put forward by the Junior League of Greenwich in helping us to create a true farm to fork experience for our residents,” said Lore.
Earlier this month, on June 4, Junior League New Member volunteers did an initial general clean-up of the area and built two raised garden beds. Then, a variety of herbs, vegetables, and flowers were planted. The raised nature of the beds will provide ease of access for maintenance. After the project was completed, the new members spent time getting to know the residents while attending the annual “Tee Party” hosted at the Parsonage Cottage.
The project resulted from collaboration with the Parsonage Cottage Fundraising Board, Miki and Richard Cottrell. Additionally, Eric Anderson Landscaping donated the compost. The project members were Apryl Goodwin, Ashley Liebre, Jennifer Rockwell, Julia Horowitz, Katie Zoufaly, Rachel Howard, Sara Diressova, Tatiana Fabian, and Stephanie Blazzi. Parsonage Cottage residents certainly will enjoy the benefits of the gardens for years to come.
“Parsonage Cottage residents enjoy being connected to the Greenwich community through extra-curricular activities, productive relationships, and several community partnerships, and we will now add the Junior League of Greenwich to that list,” added Lore.
