Statement from Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo:
Greenwich is one of the 10 safest small towns to live in according to a new study by the personal finance firm MoneyGeek.
This study is done annually and it ranks safest small towns by the cost of crime per capita. On this year’s list Greenwich is ranked tenth in the entire county with a cost of $81 per capita. This ranking not only establishes Greenwich as one of the safest small towns in the country but also as the safest in Connecticut under MoneyGeek’s metrics.
The study additionally found that Greenwich has the lowest cost of crime per capita in Connecticut.
“This ranking shows what we already know, that Greenwich is a safe place for its residents,” First Selectman Fred Camillo said on Monday. “People recognize that Greenwich is the kind of place to move to and raise their families and it is also the kind of town that people want to remain in for generations. We saw an influx of residents when, during the COVID-19 pandemic, people left New York City and wanted the kind of small town that we treasure having in Greenwich. This ranking backs up what makes this Town so special.”
Camillo added, “This ranking is a testament to the excellent job our hard-working police officers are doing here not only keeping us safe but working hand in hand with the community and our neighborhoods. We know we are in safe hands with the Greenwich Police Department.”
“Of course we will all still have to do our parts as residents. We have seen burglaries recently and there are ongoing concerns about vehicle thefts. We are not immune to crime in Greenwich and people need to take common sense steps like locking their doors, setting up cameras and sensor lights, getting themselves a dog and, importantly, when people see something they need to say something,” Camillo said.
According to MoneyGeek’s Head of Data and Analytics Doug Milnes, “The analysis pairs reported crime statistics with academic research on the societal costs of different types of crimes to estimate the cost of crime for each city.”
