Red Cross Safety Town program to be held in person this year

The American Red Cross Safety Town Program is returning to Greenwich this summer, providing children with comprehensive safety education to prepare them for kindergarten in the fall. The event will take place in person at the Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink, located at 1 Sue Merz Way, Greenwich, during the weeks of June 5 and June 12.

The Safety Town Program is a one-week education program aimed at providing children with accident prevention and awareness skills, and daily lessons include handouts and additional reference information for parents and caregivers. Classroom teachers, along with representatives from the police, fire, EMS departments, and other community helpers, will guide the children in learning safety tips in a classroom setting. The children will also be fitted with their own bike safety helmet, which they can keep as a memento.

At the end of each week of training, the children receive a Safety Town diploma, recognizing their hard work and dedication to learning about personal and community safety. However, space is limited, so interested families are encouraged to register early to ensure their child’s spot.

Instructors are still needed to lead the discussions and guide activities with preschool-aged children. Successful candidates will be enthusiastic, comfortable leading discussions and guiding activities with children, and will receive curriculum training. The commitment includes preparation/set-up and curriculum training days on June 4, and classroom dates from June 5-9 and June 12-16, 2023, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch break. Instructors will receive a stipend of $1,925, while assistant instructors will receive $1,540. Successful candidates will also need to pass a background check.

Stephanie Dunn Ashley, CEO of American Red Cross Metro New York North, said, “We are thrilled to bring the Safety Town Program back to Greenwich for summer 2023. We look forward to seeing the children’s growth in their understanding of safety and awareness, and we encourage families to register early to secure their child’s spot.”
