Panel to discuss the effects of social media, tech in children

Christ Church Greenwich will host a panel discussion titled “Social Media and Tech: What Parents Need to Know”, on Sunday, May 7, 11:15 am, in the Parish Hall.

The community is invited to breakfast, coffee/tea and conversation, when a panel of four experts will explore the reality of what effects social media, gaming, AI, and VR has on students. The event is free and open to all.

We live in a digital world that is new to many of us. The reality is that things change so fast that we often miss the dangers that our kids are presented with in this digital world.

Christ Church Greenwich Youth Director, Josh Barton, will lead a panel that will speak on what we can do to protect our kids, set healthy boundaries, and learn the truths about this digital world.

The Panel:

● Greenwich Police Sergeant Brent Reeves is the Supervisor of the Special Victims Section in the Greenwich Police Department. He oversees five detectives and two School Resource Officers at Greenwich High School. His responsibilities include crimes against the vulnerable – children, the elderly, child porn, human trafficking, and more.

● Josh Barton has sixteen years of experience as a full time Youth Minister, helping and supporting students with all aspects of their life. Josh has a gift for cultivating strong relationships with students, parents, volunteers, and organizes faith-based, ongoing group curriculums and discussion groups, week-long camps and events.

● Juliette Brindak Blake is the founder of Miss O and Friends, a safe media brand for tween girls. Juliette founded her company while attending Greenwich High School. When Juliette was in college, Procter + Gamble invested in Miss O, enabling them to grow into the #3 Girls Only website. With her 15+ years of experience, Juliette’s built a brand with proven empowerment through mission driven content in leadership, STEAM + computer science. Juliette’s goal is to build a healthier digital future for this next generation, to create content and platforms that empower these next leaders, builders and creators and work toward changing the toxic content narrative for girls through safe, healthy and empowering spaces online. She’s also been a speaker at TEDx Bay Area and has participated in conference panels like the Harvard Business School Women in Business Conference.

● Buck Allen is an Associate on the Thriving Youth Team for the Community Fund of Darien, serving parts of Lower Fairfield County with issues including mental health care, homelessness, and youth success. As a Gen Z representative, Buck will speak to us first hand about what it is like to be in the eye of the social media hurricane.
