With two other Vietnam veterans, in 1979 Robert Doubek co-founded the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund to raise private money to fund the design, promotion, and implementation of a memorial to honor all U.S veterans of the Vietnam War. They ran a nationwide open design competition juried by well-known artists and landscape architects, the largest design competition of its kind. In spite of numerous financial, political, and bureaucratic obstacles, the memorial was completed in a remarkably short time, and has become a beloved place for contemplation and reflection.
