Groundhogs in Conflict Over Arrival of Spring
Last Thursday was Groundhog Day, and while the USA’s most famous Groundhog, the Pennsylvanian Groundhog by which many set their early spring or late winter expectations, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow and therefore declared another six weeks of winter. However, Connecticut’s official groundhog, Chuckles XI, did not see his shadow, therefore predicting an early spring. It may be another six weeks of winter outside, but in our hearts, it’s starting to get nice and toasty.

POLICE & FIRE
The Town of Greenwich Emergency Management Director, Greenwich Police Department, Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, Greenwich Department of Human Services, Greenwich Department of Health, and Kids In Crisis attended a tabletop exercise on how to respond to a mass casualty incident. Different departments in our municipality sat down together to go create a plan before a mass casualty event occurs. A mass casualty event is an incident in which emergency services resources, such as personnel and equipment, are overwhelmed by the number and severity of residents who are injured or dead. ​​The training was sponsored and offered by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health, Region 1.

Greenwich Fire Department Welcomes Two New Recruits
Earlier this week, the Greenwich Fire Department welcomed two new recruits, Kevin Baird and Torrey Childs. Both were sworn in yesterday and are headed to the fire academy next week for training.

AROUND TOWN
Local Teens Make Midnight Run in Below Freezing Temps
Last Friday night temperatures reached highs of 12 degrees Fahrenheit after 6pm, but a group of local teens braved the weather to help unhoused people. Brunswick School students the Keystone Club of Boys and Girls Club Greenwich made a “midnight run” to distribute food, warm clothing, toiletries, and blankets to those who are unhoused in New York City. The group made several stops beginning at 9:30pm, with many of the students having completed Midnight Run trips previously.

February is Spay and Neuter Month
February is Spay and Neuter Awareness Month. Healthy puppies are recommended to be spayed/neutered at NO LESS than 6 months of age. Healthy kittens can be spayed/neutered as young as 8 weeks or 2 months of age. Contact your veterinarian or local animal shelter to find out what programs are available.

Request to Army Corp of Engineers: Help with Dredging Greenwich Harbor
Recently, United States Representative to Connecticut Jim Himes sent a letter to the Army Corps of Engineers requesting their support in dredging Greenwich Harbor. An initial $500,000 has been requested from the Army Corps of Engineers to test the soil and silt in the harbor in order to determine if it can be safely dredged and moved. The channel was last dredged in 1968 and currently, portions of the harbor are below 8ft.

Greenwich Boys and Girls Club Raises Over $17,500
The numbers are in, at their Swim-A-Thon on January 28th, the Greenwich Boys and Girls Club raised over $17,500 for their aquatics programs. This was their 17th annual Swim-A-Thon, and swimmers swam more than 1,400 laps.

Greenwich Academy Announces Graduation Speaker
Greenwich Academy has announced that their 2023 graduation speaker will be Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America. This year is the school’s 196th commencement which will be held on Thursday, May 18th.

Riverside Student Earns Awards
Riverside resident and student at King school Ellie Wayland has been selected by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers for a Scholastic Art & Writing Award. The awards are the nation’s longest-running recognition for students with a long list of notable awardees including Cy Twombly, Lena Dunham, Stephen King, and Amanda Gorman. Wayland is an artist in her senior year at King School and has earned a Silver Key for her digital artwork “Cityscape.” The piece is part of a science fiction story she is creating using an iPad and Procreate.

Greenwich High girls basketball team posts key late-season with against Ridgefield; Madi Utzinger with 11 points
With the regular season concluding next week and the postseason looming, the time is now for the Greenwich High School girls basketball team to compete at its highest level. The Cardinals, who have qualified for the CIAC Class LL Tournament and are in a position to earn a berth into the eight-team FCIAC Tournament, must finish their regular season strong in order to receive their best possible seed for the conference tourney.

Greenwich High School’s girls ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie against the combined Amity/Cheshire/North Haven co-op team on Tuesday at Lou Astorino Ice Rink, thanks to Sophie Roth.
