Obituary: Catherine Peterson

Catherine Marie “Kitty” (Butler) Peterson passed away peacefully at her home in West Brookfield, MA on Thursday, December 29, 2022, surrounded by the love of her family.

Kitty was predeceased by her parents, Pierce and Mary Butler who emigrated to the United States from Ireland and her husband Carl “Pete” Peterson, who was the love of her life for 64 years.

She was born in Greenwich, CT on December 21, 1931, and spent the majority of her life there. Kitty and her husband moved to Trumbull in 1991 and in 2018 they moved to West Brookfield to be closer to family.

Kitty graduated from Greenwich High School and became a part of the community working for the Town Highway Department for many years as well as working as a nurse’s aide at Greenwich Hospital. She also helped support her family’s small business in town.

She was a loving wife, caring mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Some of her greatest joy came from her family. She raised her children with love and devotion.

Kitty was known for her kindness, gentle warm smile, humor, and grace as well as her distinct sense of fashion. She will also be remembered for her incredible courage in facing the health challenges that came as she aged.

Kitty leaves behind three daughters, Cynthia Smith and her husband David of Ansonia, Cathi Peterson and her partner Sandy Binion of West Brookfield, and Caryn Jack and her husband Andrew, and their two children Ailín and Annika of West Brookfield. Kitty is also survived by her two sisters Patricia “Pat” Giuliano of Rye Brook, NY and Helen Dobson of Troutman, NC. Her brother Jerry Butler of Greenwich predeceased her.

Friends and relatives may call on the family Thursday, January 12 from 10:00 am until 11:30 am at Fred D. Knapp and Son Funeral Home, 267 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, CT. A service and celebration of Kitty’s life will be held at 11:30 am, interment will be immediately following at St. Mary-Putnam Cemetery, 399 North Street, Greenwich, CT.

The loss of her beloved husband last year was heartbreaking, and her family grieves her loss but takes great comfort in knowing that Kitty and Pete are united again – dancing together forever.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
