POLICE AND FIRE

Structural Fire in Cos Cob

In the early morning last Thursday, Greenwich Professional Firefighters (GPF) were dispatched to a structure fire in Cos Cob. Engine 2 arrived first and immediately transmitted a working fire and alerted incoming companies that they had fire throughout the residence. “Units initiated defensive ops briefly due to the large fire load and then quickly transitioned to an interior attack with 3 lines stretched and operating” according to the GPF Facebook. Searches of the building were conducted but returned “negative.” No injuries were reported, and the scene is currently under investigation by the GFD Fire Marshals division. Engines 2,5,1,3, and 8; Truck 1; Cars 4 and 1; Rescue 5 from Sound Beach; Patrol 2 from Cos Cob Fire Police; and Squad 1 from Amorgerone were all on scene.

First Congregational 56th Tree & Wreath Sale

Just across from Binney Park, the First Congregational Church 56th Annual Christmas Tree & Wreath Sale will get underway on Saturday, November 26th from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Funds raised will be given to Abilis, Mothers for Others, Pacific House, Building One Community, Barbara’s House and the Fund for New Covenant Center Soup Kitchen.

Phone Scam Warning

Police warn residents of a phone scam where the caller pretends to be Greenwich police Sergeant Daniel Bucci. Police would like to make it clear that Sgt. Bucci is not contacting anyone and advising them to wire money through a bank app in order to avoid arrest.

Oldest House in Riverside Seeking Protection

Last Thursday, the Board of Selectmen considered a request from the Historic District Commission to be the study committee for an application for Samuel Ferris House, the oldest house in Riverside, to be designated a “Local Historic Property.” The house is already listed on the National Register of Historic Places. That listing is only an honorary distinction and does not prevent demolition.

Annual Greenwich DAR Awards

The annual DAR awards in Greenwich, Connecticut took place this past Sunday, November 13th. Winston Mark Rider received the Outstanding Youth Award, Molly Kokoruda received the Outstanding Historic Preservation Award, and Bill Cameron received the Outstanding Veteran Award.

Local Business – Wildacre Rotisserie Hosting a Chicken Challenge

Wildacre Rotisserie has launched its 41 Chickens in 41 Days challenge. The first customer to eat 41 chickens in the span of 41 days will win a variety of prizes. In addition to the challenge, Wildacre will also donate $1,000 to Greenwich nonprofit Neighbor to Neighbor to help feed families this holiday season.

Here are the rules:

1) 41 whole rotisserie chickens must be purchased from Wildacre over a period of 41 days, excluding Thanksgiving (takeout, delivery and dine in are all fine).

2) The winner must submit proof of purchase for all 41 rotisserie chickens from Wildacre.

3) The first person to submit proof of purchase for 41 whole rotisserie chickens will be deemed the winner.

4) The winner will receive Wildacre for a year, equivalent to $2000 in store credit to be redeemed at Wildacre only, not applicable to orders from third party ordering systems (UberEats, DoorDash, Grubhub, etc) or catering orders.

5) Wildacre will reimburse the winner for the purchase of 41 Wildacre whole rotisserie chickens, excluding any delivery fees or additional food ordered.

Last week Apollo, a high-growth, global alternative asset manager, celebrated its first day open at its new Greenwich, Connecticut office by holding a ribbon cutting with Head of Human Capital Matt Breitfelder, Finance Partner Jim Crossen, Apollo employees and First Selectman Fred Camillo.

Local Nonprofit – Greenwich Emergency Services Celebrates New Station 4

Last Wednesday, Greenwich Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) presented the new Station 4 building on King Street with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house. Located at 1327 King St., the new facility is 3,000-square-feet and right next to the Griffith E. Harris Golf Course and is replacing a trailer which GEMS had been using since 2013.

Riverside School Veterans Day Ceremony

On Greenwich Police Chief Jim Heavey in salute during a moment of silence, photo by Sarah Jenkins. Friday, November 11, 2022, Riverside School hosted its annual Veterans Day Ceremony. The ceremony kicked off at 9am with opening remarks from Principal Christopher Weiss followed by the raising of the flag.  Students with relatives in the military presented flowers to their respective family members who were honored at the event.  Greenwich Police Chief Jim Heavey then laid the wreath followed by a moment of silence honoring those who died in foreign wars.

Greenwich boys soccer team edges Fairfield Prep in a penalty shootout to reach the CIAC Class LL Tournament finals

A tense penalty shootout situation is nothing new to the Greenwich High School boys soccer team, which entering last night’s CIAC Class LL semifinal-round game against Fairfield Prep, had already defeated Farmington and top-seeded Trumbull in matchups that were decided by penalty kicks. Therefore, when nothing was settled between Greenwich and Fairfield Prep during regulation time, then overtime, the Cardinals were quite comfortable when it was penalty shootout time.

An event that is one of the highlights of the Greenwich High School cheerleading program each year recently took place, as the team held its 15th annual Fashion Show in Stamford – a popular fundraiser in which the varsity cheerleaders take center stage.

Recount Over: Fazio Wins 2nd Term

Following an automatic recount in the election between incumbent Ryan Fazio and challenger Trevor Crow, the results will have likely changed by only 6 votes total, confirming Fazio’s win for the 36th state Senate seat. Fazio said he was grateful to all those who worked on the recount in Greenwich, New Canaan, and Stamford over the past week. “Thank you to the staff and volunteers at Greenwich Town Hall, Stamford Government Center, and New Canaan Town Hall,” he said, “for your participation in the election process and careful attention to counting every vote. Without you, our time-tested democratic process could not work.”

Attorney General Tong Announces Settlement with Walmart

This past Tuesday, Attorney General William Tong announced Connecticut had reached a settlement with Walmart in order to resolve allegations over the company contributing to the opioid addiction crisis. The settlement will dispense more than $3 billion nationally, requiring significant improvements on Walmart pharmacies handling of opioids. The $3.1 billion to be divided by states, local governments, and tribes that sign onto the settlement will be used to provide treatment and recovery services to people struggling with opioid use disorder.

Dennis James Powell passed away on November 11; Vincenza M. Siciliano passed away in her sleep on November 11; Theresa Gill Zavattaro, a lifelong resident of Greenwich, passed away November 10; Jean (McHugh) Duffy, 92, a lifelong Greenwich resident, died Tuesday, November 8; Sherrill Burger Kellam, 63, passed away on November 6; Tony Sciarrillo, a lifelong Greenwich resident, passed away Wednesday, November 2; Margarete O. Gramlich passed away on October 16 at the age of 84; Peter G. Horton passed away on July 16.
