Michael V. Higgins, age 79, passed away from Lewy Body Dementia on October 9, at his home in Oxford, CT, surrounded by his family.
Mike was born on June 20, 1943, in Greenwich, CT, to Michael V. Higgins, Sr. and Sheila Higgins. He grew up in Cos Cob, CT, his favorite place on earth. He graduated from Greenwich High School in 1962 and then enlisted in the US Navy. He served aboard the USS Little Rock CLG-4, the flagship of the sixth fleet and cruised extensively in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic. He was a proud US Navy veteran.
Mike joined the Town of Greenwich Fire Dept. in 1970, retiring in 1994 after 24 years of service. He was an avid fisherman; he loved fly fishing and tied his own flies. He loved being on the water, whether sailing “Impetuous” on the Long Island Sound or kayaking in Bass Harbor. He loved playing the bagpipes. He loved salmon fishing on Long Pond on MDI. He loved playing golf at Kebo Valley Club in Bar Harbor and he loved his wife, kids and grandkids.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Susie Higgins; his daughter, Kerry Whittaker and her son, Matthew; his son, Sean Higgins and his children, Hailee and Aiden; and his son, Brian Higgins. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Elinor Morgan of Sebastian, FL, Sheila Heberling of Vero Beach, FL, and Renee Uva (Domenick) of Sebastian, FL; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws whom he loved dearly.
A special thank you to Barbara Gilloren for always being there for us.
