Dwight Chapin first worked for Nixon in his 1962 California gubernatorial campaign, and after that defeat continued to work closely with him, eventually becoming his most trusted personal aide. He found Nixon to be extraordinarily hard-working, analytical, and resilient, able to bounce back after major setbacks. He was also very adaptable, learning how to use TV appearances to his advantage, and normalizing relations with China after having been a staunch anti-Communist.
